Crawfish Boil

6/6/11

Anyone ever been to a proper crawfish boil before? If you're not familiar with the little crustaceans, read up... they are related to lobsters but live in freshwater. Boiling them in a big pot with corn, potatoes and a mess of delicious spices is a Louisiana must. But if you live in LA instead of La, you're not going to find them in your local pond. So our friend Scott overnighted a big batch, and we had a proper tail twisting, finger cracking, head sucking crawfish boil!

The experience is a must if you like food, or enjoy hanging out in a circle with your friends. Everyone gathers around a table with a red cup of cold beer and their sleeves rolled up. If you're me, it takes you forever to crack into the "mini lobsters" - but the result is a sweet, perfectly succulent piece of fish that is worth all the effort. Just don't get a manicure before the BBQ.

hello...

mud bugs...

dude. this is dinner...

sweet corn and red potatoes...

everything in the pot with a delicious spice mix (at least they don't scream like lobsters)...

gather round...

all that work for this much meat (worth it)...

sucking the head...

last man standing...

I'm so jealous! Growing up in Texas, I went to countless crawfish boils. And sometimes they got a little out of hand. I should fly some into Chicago and have one here!
