PIG FEAST: Vegetarians, Be Warned...

3/9/11

I meant to write this morning, but I haven't been feeling very well and I exhausted every ounce of energy trying not to lose my kid at the market. So I apologize, and let's get straight to it... LAST NIGHT I ATE PIG BRAINS.

And ears, tongue, belly, etc... I hope this post does not offend anyone that read Charlotte's Web one time too many (me) and really believed Wilber would make an excellent pet (me).

Ford's Filling Station in Culver City, CA is a wonderful gastropub. Chef Ben Ford really knows what he's doing in the kitchen, and this is beside the point but he and his dad look very much alike. One thing he offers at his restaurant is a Whole Pig Dinner Feast (above photo). So without further adieu I will share a little of the piglet we devoured last night...

Bacon wrapped dates...

A great way to ease into the meal. I am not even a fan of dates but these were delicious... huge fan of sweet and salty. Next, the belly of the pork on toast, with some fried pig ears on top...

The texture of the belly... pretty gamy. But at the same time it reminded me of a pate, which I love. And the salty, crunchy ear on top added a nice contrast. Next up, the tongue...

Sliced very thinly, in a salad with some more ear, I believe, maybe pickled? I can't remember. I wasn't a huge fan of the ear but I loved the tongue. It tasted like the best kind of deli meat, and my son loved it! Moving on, headcheese...

Sounds revolting. But it's not, headcheese is actually a cold cut. The texture was very much like a thick piece of salami. And, more ear...

Fried and dipped in aioli. Pretty good, but some bites were more gamy than others. I'm being honest! And finally, cheese curds...

Wait, no. No, no... those are EYEBALLS. Which I did not partake in. And I do not have a picture of the brain, but when it came out everyone was all... "Come on, Siri, you have a FOOD BLOG, you HAVE to try it." So I did. And I did not enjoy. And I could not get it out of my teeth (I warned you).

All in all, a WONDERFUL experience and the platter of pig (first image) was as good as pulled pork gets! Thank you Chef Ben Ford!!!

(I still want to hold you like a baby, Wilber.)

I ate pig face at Stephanie Izard's Girl and the Goat, 3 weeks ago. My friends thought it was culinary genious. I'm sticking with....just because you can...doesnt mean you should. :(

I told Sean about this post because he has been obsessed with the idea of cooking a whole pig in our back yard at some point during the summer and he now thinks you are "pretty badass."
