Three Strikes

11/29/10

Happy Cyber Monday! How were your Thanksgiving weekends?! Are you all on a diet (sort of) like me?! I have a lot of posting to do today... a few Turkey Day recipes, a great leftover dish... but first, I thought I'd recap some of the highs (and lows) of Thanksgiving 2010!

Always a high, starting out the morning with scrumptious Bloody Mary's.

This was actually taken the day before, as I brined my turkey in beer. Turkey brining requires an up-do, like mine...

We decided to cook two turkeys this year. The traditional oven roasted kind...

...and an experimental one, stuffed with Jack Daniels.

Ok, actually, it was injected with a Bourbon/butter/chicken stock/seasoned mixture and then smoked in a grill. Delicious! Juicy, full of flavor, crispy skin and I think it beat out my Malt Beer-Brined Turkey a weeee bit!

Now, onto the lows because no Thanksgiving would be complete with a couple of "oops" moments. At least not in my kitchen.

Low #1: Baking bread with an oven mitt under the pot. Here's how it went... Boyfriend: Do you smell something burning? Me: No. (I did.) Boyfriend: Are you sure, I really smell something burning? Me: (Getting defensive.) It's just the pot, it smells like that.

Then we opened the oven and took out the bread.

Oops.

Low #2: Another oven mitt catches on fire. Really?! I need new oven mitts.

Low #3: As we're cleaning up and trying to find matching lids for tupperware, I noticed that I had left the bag of innards IN the bag, in my turkey, during the whole cooking process. Oops.

Lows aside, it was a wonderful day spent with family and I felt very thankful. I hope you did too! The End.

The first turkey I roasted I did the same thing: left the innards in the bag, in the neck cavity and baked it that way. I had NO Idea it was even in there until I took it out of the oven. Oh well. Live & learn, right? :)

I left the innards in a chicken I cooked in the crockpot once. And I have trouble with oven mitts too. They don't last long in my house. Looks like you guys had a great holiday, though!
