King Cake

3/7/11

Tomorrow is Mardi Gras, and over the weekend I made a King Cake for the first time. Looking back, it has become apparent to me that I was in over my head, for multiple reasons. The first being I didn't exactly read the recipe before starting (a HUGE mistake) and suddenly found myself alone with my son, who decided to have an epic meltdown, while I was supposed to be kneading the dough for 15 long minutes. Picture me, son in one arm, punching my cake with one fist, pleading with him to go watch Toy Story 3. What a great mom. Secondly, I brought the cake to a friend's house as dessert and as I took the first bite, I quickly realized the cake is much more appropriate for a brunch. It tasted somewhere in between a coffee cake and cinnamon roll.

I used this recipe, from Mr. New Orleans himself. The cake tasted great (while slightly dense) but I thought the frosting was too sweet and needed much more condensed milk than the recipe called for. I think I'd find another recipe if I made this in the future! Whatever, it was purty...

yeast and milk and flour and what not...

dough...

dough hath risen...

braid (you should know I can't even braid my own hair)...

opted for a bundt pan vs. sheet pan...

baked...

frosting...

sprinkles...

*Update: No, I did not insert a tiny plastic baby inside the cake. For one thing, where does one find a tiny plastic baby?? Also, I still cut grapes in half for my two-year-old, and I really don't want to worry about him choking on a tiny plastic human inside a cake.

I've never had a king cake that didn't taste like a coffee cake or danish. Yours sure does look pretty, though!

Looks good! I've only had 1 king cake, it tasted like poo. Yours looks like it'd taste much better :)

PS BTDT with the kid, begging to watch Martha Speaks or ANYTHING so I can finish my cooking :)

Did you hide a lil plastic baby in your king cake?

Same question as Katy, who got the plastic baby? It's not a King cake without the baby!

I'm from the New Orleans area and work with your buddy, Ingrid. The king cake looks fantastic! I don't know why I've never tried to make one. You can usually find the plastic babies at any party store that sells Mardi Gras stuff. Happy Mardi Gras!
