Cake in a Mug

8/26/10

Have you ever heard of the 3 Minute Chocolate Mug Cake? Last night I finally tried it, and I have some Good News and some Bad News.

This is the Good News:

That's Absurdly Happy Siri. Carson thinks it's the most joyful he's ever seen me. I disagree, and I think it looks like I just murdered three people and have chopped up body parts in my pocket. But the truth is, I WAS happy, and that is the Good News. This is fun to make! Cake in a mug?! Cake in the microwave?! Cake in 3 minutes?!

Sooooo... the Bad News is... it's not very good. I know, buzz kill. The texture is a little spongy, and it's lacking in chocolate flavor. I didn't have the optional chocolate chips on me, and I think they would have helped. Still, it's your very own chocolate cake in 3 minutes and I still recommend trying it. Serve it with ice cream and maybe drizzle some chocolate sauce on top. Recipe here.

Flour, sugar and cocoa...

One egg that has not been recalled...

Oil, milk and vanilla...

Nuke it...

I saw this last week and I've been dying to try it. I'll be sure to include lots of optional chocolate chips though.

Presented with a candle and ice cream...what is not to like? Next time my supper tastes like dreck, I plan to put a spoon in a mug handle as a distraction. LOVE that idea!!!

I think you look like a happy Mama with a mug full of chocolate cake. I'm also glad to know that I'm not the only one who looks like that sometimes.

As for the cake, I will absolutely try this soon - and maybe even play with the recipe to see if I can make it better. If I succeed, I will certainly tell you. Because, really, who couldn't use this recipe in their back pocket? Only it should taste good.

Even though you say it's not that good, I can absolutely picture myself making this when I'm desperate for something chocolate and can't wait to make an actual cake. I've been known to do much worse (like melt chocolate chips and eat them with a spoon) so I bet I'd like this in a pinch.

First of all, that picture of you is hilarious. And I agree, you do look like a crazed homicidal maniac. Second, we made this same cake in a mug sometime in the last year and had the exact same reaction: gleeful anticipation and then disappointment. It's really not good, even when considering it took less than 5 minutes. Bummer, huh?

I've done this many times. The chocolate chips are a must, but if you don't have them I add more sugar and vanilla to bring out the chocolate flavor. Also I only microwave 2:15. It comes out much less spongy and the bottom is slightly molton. So yummy!

Ok... so my mother gave me this "cake in a mug" recipe a while back, and I was SUPER DUPER excited!!! but i agree... cause then when i ate it I was also disappointed :( BUT I think I made it a bit better by adding peanut butter chips to it, and then serve with ice cream and drizzle chocolate over the top!! It definitely makes it better!! Not AWESOME, but better ;-) I make it for myself quit a bit, cause i have chocolate cake cravings ALL OF THE TIME!!
N-E-ways try the peanut butter chips ;-)
OH yeah, AND add just a pinch of salt too, brings the chocolate flavor out more ;-)

wow, i've never heard of this before! it looks like a great idea and i definitely want to try it because:
1. it's fast and easy
2. if it already tastes like turds on it's on, my notoriously bad cooking skills won't have any effect.

thanks for the recipe.

YUMMY! I love the cake in the mug idea! I have a book from Hungry Girl that has the cake in mug recipes and egg mcmuggins, lol. Looks so yummy & love the pic w/ice cream and a candle, awesome!
